The Void is neither empty nor full. It is a simultaneous expression of nothing and everything. The Void is pregnant with all possibilities. Western philosophy has inaccurately attributed the value of zero to the Void. It is in the east where we find just how complete and abundant the concept of zero is. The symbol for zero is a circle, complete and eternally looping, never ending. The Void is permanent, inescapable and whole, containing all that ever was and all that will be.
In January of 2014 I had a dream I was painting a single black geometric shape against a subtly different black ground. The words “The Void” were uttered within the dream, not from anyone specifically, just more like an all enveloping voice. So I listened. I decided to paint a few of them, over forty of them to be precise. Some became white on white, others were black on black. I was surprised at how they kept my attention for so long, almost two years. The Void series was teaching me to slow down and recognize the expansive possibilities of simple form and palettes. I was thinking in terms of minimalism. That was quite a departure from all of my previous work spanning three decades ( 1984-2014). I embraced it fully and within a few years color slowly approached the surfaces of my work, though still in a minimal way. Six years after that initial dream, year after year painting in solitude, I have gathered the ideas and the images. This website has been long in the making. I hope you enjoy the new work.
